Az3D: Scanning Portugal's Azulejos in their Architectural Context

Az3D is a 5-day workshop that will train graduate art and architectural history students in Portugal in the creation of 3D models of architecture-scale heritage sites through two main technologies. The primary technology in the workshop will be photogrammetry – a photographic technique that builds dense 3D models from real objects and places by taking many overlapping photos in a gridded or orbiting pattern. Students will learn how to use manual settings on a DSLR camera to ensure that all photos have matching exposure and white balance, as well as best practices for planning a photogrammetric capture session and how to process models with Agisoft Metashape. The second technology, called “procedural modeling” will train students to develop rule-based 3D models of buildings and architectural spaces using a specialized software called Houdini.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants and instructors will work together to develop a prototype workflow that will project photogrammetry-derived orthophotos of azulejos murals onto specific 3D surfaces in procedural models of churches, cloisters, and other architectural spaces that frequently contain azulejos.

Participants in the workshop will not be expected to be familiar with photogrammetry or 3D modeling, but some experience with a DSLR camera is helpful.
