Susana Coentro

VICARTE | Glass and Ceramics for the Arts, FCT-NOVA


Susana Coentro is a researcher at VICARTE (Glass and Ceramics for the Arts) at FCT-NOVA, Portugal. She earned her PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage with expertise in Technical Art History in 2017, and her thesis was awarded an SOS Azulejo Prize. Since 2010, her research has focused the study of glazed tiles from Portuguese and international collections, with a special interest in the production techniques, historical treatises, pigments, and archaeometry within the field of Technical Art History. She has published in peer-reviewed international journals on the topic of glazed tiles, glass, and other glass-based materials. She has also lectured in several courses at the Department of Conservation and Restoration at FCT-NOVA. In 2019, she started the individual project White Glazes: the foundations of the Portuguese faience technology (CEECIND/00882/2017) to study the beginnings of the Portuguese production of tin-glazed ceramics and, since 2021, she is the Principal Investigator of the FCT-funded project ChromAz - The Chromatic Journey of the Portuguese Azulejo (PTDC/HAR-HIS/1899/2020).
