Inês Leitão

PhD student at ARTIS – the Institute of Art History of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) and a member of Az – Azulejo Research Network since 2013. She is currently a doctoral fellow of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) (SFRH/BD/128849/2017 | COVID/BD/151854/2021), studying contemporary azulejos applied in public spaces (1950-2020), under the supervision of Vítor Serrão and the co-supervision of Pedro Lapa and Rosário Salema de Carvalho.

In 2016 she obtained a Master’s degree in Art, Heritage and Restoration Theory from the same university, with a dissertation entitled A arte pública e a construção do lugar. A presença do azulejo (1970-2013) (Public art and the construction of a place. The presence of the azulejo). In her thesis, she focused on how the azulejo, as an element of public art, enables the construction of a place, and offered a reflection on contemporary azulejos and public art.

She holds a degree in Art History from FLUL (2013) and graduated in Graphic Design at the Profession School for Image Studies of the ETIC group – School of Technology, Innovation and Creation (2009). She has been responsible for the design and communication of Az.

As a researcher, she was involved in some of Az’s projects, such as Az Infinitum – Azulejo Indexation and Referencing System, and integrated the permanent team of the monthly seminar AzLab – Azulejo Studies. Previously, she collaborated with this research group by developing a traineeship focused on part of the Cortiço & Netos collection (20th century patterned azulejos). She also participated in the project Off-Off Lisbon: Alternative Urban Narratives, developed by the group THELEME – Interart and Intermedia Studies (Centre for Comparative Studies / FLUL). She has published book chapters and journal articles and her current research interests include contemporary azulejos, art theory and public space.
