Coordinator [2006-2012]


Susana Varela Flor was researcher and coordinator of João Miguel dos Santos Simões Thematic Network for the Study of Azulejos and Ceramics (RTEACJMSS) since November 2006 until November 2012, and got her Ph.D. in History (Art History, Heritage and Restoration) from the University of Lisbon (Faculty of Letters) in 2010. Her doctoral dissertation on Aurum Reginae or Queen-Gold : the Iconography of Catherine of Braganza in 17th century Portugal and England was supervised by Prof. Dr. Vitor Serrão with the assistance of Prof. Dr. Paula Lourenço. 

In 2003 she was awarded an MA degree in Art History, Heritage and Restoration by the University of Lisbon (Faculty of Letters) with a thesis on Marcos da Cruz and Proto-Baroque Painting in the second half of the 17th century supervised by Prof. Dr. Vítor Serrão. 

From 2006 she has been closely linked to the foundation of RTEACJMSS and in charge of the inventory of JMSS scientific legacy and its removal to the National Tile Museum. In 2007 she was a member of the Scientific Committee that organized an exhibition to commemorate the centenary of JMSS birth and at that time she structured the Thematic Network for the Study of Tiles and Ceramics and became its coordinator. This was instrumental in promoting an increase in the number of scholarships and researchers linked to the project. She was responsible for superintending the tasks connected with the study, inventory and dissemination of JMSS scientific legacy (SS Archive), including its cataloguing and register in the DIGITARQ database and its online availability in the website of RTEACJMSS. Additionally, she directed the research project on Artistic Interference: Art and Artistry in the Portuguese Baroque Age as well as the inventory of painting and other arts that integrate the collections of the Central Lisbon Hospital Centre.
