This project was launched by the Judiciary Police Museum (under the authority of the Institute of Judiciary Police and Criminal Sciences – IPJCC), which is also responsible for its coordination. SOS Azulejo was officially created on 28 February 2007 with the aim of “countering the serious dilapidation of Portuguese tile heritage (…) through theft, vandalism and neglect”, by means of a multidisciplinary approach involving partnerships with different entities, including Az – Azulejo Research Network, for “only an investment in the global safeguarding of cultural heritage can guarantee a minimum of efficacy.” 

The cooperation protocol, in the form of an addendum, was signed on 15 March 2010. Since then, Az has actively collaborated in several of the project’s activities.
